Founded in 1888, Escondido, California, is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. Meaning "hidden" in Spanish, Escondido is located in a shallow valley topped by rocky hills. It is 30 miles northeast of San Diego, about 100 miles south of Los Angeles and sits 18 miles inland. Escondido has been named by Money Magazine as the Best Place in the West to retire, and has been named a Kid-Friendly City. It was also ranked eighth by the Ladies Home Journal for the top ten cities for government. Escondido has a resident population of about 145,000.

It is considered one of the most affordable places in North San Diego County to buy a home. Escondido Transportation and Commuting

There are two highways that provide easy access to Escondido - Route 78 and I-15. Local bus service for Escondido is offered by North County Transit District; Escondido Transit Center is the hub and connects to the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and the Riverside Transit Agency. The Sprinter Light Rail system connects to the Coaster, the Metrolink Orange County Line and the Metrolink IEOC Line. Amtrak rail service is through the Pacific Surfliner rail line. The nearest airport is San Diego International Airport.
